DuPage Stars Varsity kicked off their 2017-18 season with an appearance at the 2nd Annual Lane Tech Tournament on September 15-17. The audience was treated to a thunderous national anthem sung by Chicago Blackhawks anthem singer Jim Cornelison before their first game vs Lane Tech. After dropping the opening night contest, the Stars came in to game two vs Sandburg looking for their first victory.
Both squads traded early chances but remained deadlocked in a scoreless tie until late in the second period when the Stars put heavy pressure on the Sandburg net during a power play. Chris Guy knocked home a rebound of a point blank shot by Billy Carroll to give the Stars a 1-0 lead entering the final period.
Although the Stars began the period shorthanded with Lincoln Soper in the penalty box, Carroll forced a turnover behind the Sandburg net with a strong forecheck. Carroll then scored on a quick wraparound goal. On the ensuing faceoff, Sal Carcerano made an aggressive move in winning the draw, and his brother Anthony Carcerano charged straight in to beat the goalie for the Stars second shorthanded goal in just six seconds. The onslaught continued as Anthony Carcerano completed a natural hat trick, scoring twice more by 11:19 of the third to make the score 5-0. Soper then piled on with a goal at 10:06 on a feed from Wyatt Andreuccetti, the team's fifth goal in five minutes, to put the game far out of reach.
Doug States added a goal with three minutes to play, giving the Stars a 7-0 lead that would prove to be the final score. Goaltender Brett Richert was flawless in net, turning aside 18 shots for the shutout.
